Tring
TRING is a delightful market town and civil parish in the Chiltern Hills in Hertfordshire. It has strong historical ties to the Rothschilds, the aristocratic 19th century family of German/Jewish industrialists and politicians, largely responsible for transforming this ancient hamlet to a thriving Victorian town. The family’s legacy remains today, with much of the town reflecting the Rothschild’s influence through its buildings and architecture, including the Natural Zoological History Museum. This fascinating collection displays many rare and extinct animal species, from the family’s own private taxidermy exhibits. It is situated 30 miles (48km) north-west of London and its easy access to good road and rail links has established the town as a popular commuter hub (despite Tring station being situated 2 miles away from the main town high street). The Rothschilds did not want their town spoiled by the impact of the railways and industrialisation. More recently, Tring has become home to a thriving business community of cultural and entrepreneurial companies who celebrate their local heritage with pride; artisan breweries, a gin distillery, a pop up open cinema, arts and comedy festival (the Tringe festival previews the international Edinburgh Fringe, and is now established as the “7th Longest Comedy Festival in the World”) among others, keep the townsfolk busy and entertained.
