Marlow & Cookham
Marlow
On the banks of the River Thames, 4 miles south-southwest of High Wycombe, 5 miles west-northwest of Maidenhead, and 33 miles west of central London, lies the small market town of Marlow – one of the newest members of the Local Directory family. The name is recorded in 1015 as Mere lafan, meaning “Land left after the draining of a pond” in Old English, and as Merlaue in the Doomsday Book. Locals and visitors alike flock to Marlow for its charming mix of riverside pubs, restaurants, and cafes, as well as the famous Grade 1 listed Marlow Bridge, a road traffic and foot bridge over the River Thames. Marlow was once the home of the Junior Wing of the Royal Military College, which later moved to Sandhurst in 1812. The local pubs benefit from the presence of the Rebellion Beer Company, a local microbrewery that produces regular and seasonal beers, using the chalky waters of the nearby Chiltern Hills. Marlow Rowing Club, founded in 1871, is one of Britain’s premier rowing clubs and has produced many Olympic oarsmen including Sir Steve Redgrave.
Cookham
Joining Marlow under the Local Directory umbrella is the historic neighbouring village of Cookham. Its most noted resident was the artist Sir Stanley Spencer, and it can boast several celebrities, musicians, and sports personalities among its current population. It is home to the Chartered Institute of Marketing, based in Moor Hall, and the John Lewis Partnership has a residential training and holiday centre at Odney. Picturesque in its own right, Cookham is a popular tourist destination, having a number of walks along the Thames Path and across National Trust property, plus the Stanley Spencer Gallery, based in the former Methodist chapel, with a permanent exhibition of the artist’s works. Kenneth Grahame is said to have been inspired by the River Thames at Cookham to write The Wind in the Willows, as he lived at ‘The Mount’ in Cookham Dean as a child.
